  • Android Q code is hinting that one of these cameras will use a telephoto aka zoom lens along with a 16-megapixel sensor.

Google Pixel 4 is going to be the next premium smartphone by Google. The phone has already created much buzz in the market as a Twitter account -- Made By Google -- officially released a render of the phone last month. The image showed the rear panel of Google Pixel 4. The image showed that the Pixel 4 will come with two rear cameras, and now leaked details from Android Q code is hinting that one of these cameras will use a telephoto aka zoom lens along with a 16-megapixel sensor.
Camera is the biggest selling feature in Google Pixel phones and while a single camera on Google phones like Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 are just doing fine, Google earlier revealed that the Pixel 4 will get two image sensors on the rear panel of the phone. This is going to be the first time when a Google phone will come with two cameras on the back. That's why many people on Twitter raised the question: with the secondary camera use a telephoto lens or will it have an ultra-wide lens.
Now, it seems that there is an answer to this question. People over at the XDA Developers have found some mystery code in Android Q that indicates presence of a 16-megapixel camera with telephoto lens in the Google Pixel 4. The code has been found in a beta version of Android Q -- Android Q beta 5 with build number QP1A.190626.001 -- that some Pixel users managed to obtain. This is apparently a version of Android Q that is supposed only in August because it has August security patch. But somehow it leaked early.
In this Android Q, there is the new Google Camera app version 6.3. And it is in the code of this app that there are references to a telephoto lens. Currently, none of the Pixel phones have a telephoto lens. So, chances are that the code is there because such a lens is going to come in the Pixel 4.
If Google indeed adds a telephoto lens to its next phone, the Pixel 4 will join the list that also includes the iPhone XS, the Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10 and others that have already come with a zoom lens camera. Currently from the code it is not clear what sort of zoom the Pixel 4 camera will offer. But if Pixel 4 is using 16-megapixel sensor with its telephoto lens, it is likely to be the highest resolution zoom camera in a phone in the market. Currently, most of the other phones use a 8-megapixel sensor with their telephoto lens.
Google is expected to launch the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL globally, as well as in India, either in October or in early November. Apart from two rear-cameras, the Pixel 4 phones are also expected to come with OLED screen, up to 6GB RAM, at least 64GB storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, a metal and glass body and, of course, Android Q.
